Hands on learning is a huge deal in today's classroom. Many students benefit from the hands on learning because all students do not have the same learning style. Students range from being visual to auditory to kinesthetic learners. Also, now with the NYS Common Core requiring that the students be able to use higher order thinking, a hands on activity is something that would be an asset in order for the students to achieve that goal. In the assignment below, students are given the opportunity to take a a concept but complete it in a "hands on" way that will help them to remember the skills needed in order to be successful mathematically as well as way for them to enjoy the math as opposed to the traditional way of reading it from a textbook. For my hands on activity, the students will be plotting points on a coordinate plane but using a Nerf gun; they will then take that information to help them find the equation of a circle.
